I looked at the clock, which showed we had about four minutes until my aunt was supposed to show up and drop off her kids, a four year old girl and a one year old. I wasn't going to lie, I was completely nervous. Kat and I both knew we wanted to have kids, but when it came down to experience with them? Neither of us really had any. Sure, I worked with kids, but they were all mostly over the age of six, and beyond that I had nothing, just like Kat. So I had called up my aunt and asked if she was willing to drop off my cousins for a night so that we could watch them. She had graciously accepted, but now I wasn't sure. What if it went terribly, then what did we do? "Kat, hurry up and get dressed, they'll be here any minute!" I called from the living room.
"I'm dressed already... I was just making the bed," She said and I turned towards her as she came into the room.
I smiled, reaching my arms out for her to walk into. "You look... covered up," I said, smirking as I pulled her body into mine so that she was sitting on my lap on the couch.
She laughed, her hands wrapping around my neck and playing with the back of my hair. "Do you not think I look sexy?"
I smirked, kissing her lips softly. "You're always sexy baby."
"You are instead," She murmured, kissing me even harder once again. I kissed her back, sliding my tongue into her mouth and deepening the kiss even further... and then I heard the knock on our door.
I pulled back, setting my forehead against her and smiling into her gorgeous eyes. "Ready?"
"As much as I can be," She answered, sighing and getting up from my lap and starting towards the door. I stood up and followed behind her as she opened up the door. "Hi!"
My aunt smiled at her. "Hi, hi. Thank you for doing this," She said, coming in with Haylie, the one year old, on her hip and Jessa, the four year old, shuffling in behind her.
Kat smiled back. "No problem. Thank you for letting us, really. Are you going to do anything tonight?" She asked her, looking at Jessa and smiling, waving at her as she just continued to hide behind her mom. I knew from my aunt that she was shy, and probably wouldn't open up to us right away. However, I did see her peak her head out once again to look towards Kat and I smiled as Kat just grinned at her. I didn't know why I was so worried, this was going to be fine, right?
"Me and Jason are going to go out to dinner. Honestly, it's probably been four months since we've done this. So really, thank you. We'll come and pick them back up at ten, is that good for you guys?"
I nodded. "Yeah, that's perfect."
"Alright. You have my number if you need anything and I have a bag here with bottles and some toys for both of them."
"Sounds good," Kat smiled, reaching out and taking Haylie into her own arms and I grabbed the bag of things from her. My aunt said goodbye to both Jessa and Haylie before slipping out the door just as fast as she'd come in. Now what did we do?
"Now what?" Kat asked the little baby girl in her hands, who's lower lip started to tremble in that signature sign that she was about to start crying. Kat began bouncing her against her hip. "How about a movie?"
"I don't think she's going to answer you baby," I said with a small laugh, though I was really just praying that she wouldn't start to cry. That definitely wouldn't be a good start.
Kat looked to Jessa and my eyes followed, watching as my cousin looked around our apartment. "Did you bring any movies?"
"No," She spoke, almost in a whisper.
I shifted beside Kat, locking the door and smiling down at my cousin in Kat's hands who's tiny fingers were currently wrapped in her hair and pulling lightly against it. It was kind of cute, making my smile widen just a little more. "Do you like Monsters, Inc. Jessa?" I asked, looking towards her and hoping that she would. It was the only kids movie we owned.
"I've seen it twice," She told me, and I had no idea if that meant that she liked it or would be up to watching it. Didn't kids love watching movies over and over again though?
"Kat's already seen it five times," I told her, bending down to her level but she just glanced away. "Do you want to watch it again?"
"No thank you," She answered properly.
I looked up to Kat, silently begging for help but she just shrugged. "We can find a movie on TV?" She suggested.
Jessa started towards the recliner quickly, taking a seat which I just hoped was a good thing as we started towards the couch. "I like Wizards of Waverly place." She spoke as I turned on the TV and began flipping through the channels.
"Which channel is that one on?" I asked her, having no clue what the show was, let alone on which network.
"It got canceled since Selena fell in love with Justin," She told me, crossing her arms over her chest and forming a pout that told me she was not happy with the fact.
"Do you like Justin Bieber?" Kat asked with a smile, probably proud that she even knew who she was talking about.
She shook her head, "I dislike him greatly."
I knew that Jessa had probably been attending some elite upper east side preschool and was just as well versed in at least one other language as she was english, but her proper language still made me laugh a little. "Me too," I told her, though I really didn't know much about the kid. And just then, before anyone could say anything else, Haylie started to wail in Kat's arms.
Jessa looked at me as if she was completely oblivious to her little sister crying and smiled for the first time since she was here. "My mom said you play the guitar."
I looked towards Kat who looked a little terrified trying to calm down the baby who was now red faced and kicking in her arms. "Yeah, I do. Do you like the guitar?" I asked, looking back towards Jessa, watching Kat from the corner or my eye as she searched through the bag and took out a bottle. She glanced towards me and I silently questioned if she needed help or not, but she just shook her head, instead nodding back towards Jessa who was looking at me with a look that if I wasn't wrong, was actually admiration.
"Can you play for me, please?" She asked softly, completely surprising me. Whether that was because her little sister was still crying and she didn't appear to care, or that she was actually having a completely normal conversation with me, I really didn't know.
"Um... sure. Let me just go get my guitar," I told her, shutting off the television and standing up. Before I made my into the bedroom where my guitar was, I stopped and stood next to Kat, who was trying to get Haylie to drink from her bottle but she just kept pushing it away. "Do you want help?"
She shook her head. "No... I got it," She paused before adding, "I think."
I smiled at her as she tried to calm Haylie down any way she really could. "Okay. Jessa wants me to play the guitar for her," I said and Kat raised her brow, seeming just as surprised as me. "Maybe it'll help with Haylie," I told her, not even sure if Kat heard me as Haylie tried to wriggle free from her arms, seeming to stop crying a little but only for a few seconds before she started screaming once again. I felt helpless and didn't know what to do, so I just started towards the bedroom to get my guitar, where Haylie's cries were a lot quieter. I took my case and set it on the bed, opening it and taking my guitar out. I took out a pick and slipped it into my pocket before closing the case and putting it back. As I made my way into the living room once again I realized that it was nearly silent. I glanced at Kat, who was now watching both Haylie and Jessa sitting on the floor, eating from a bag of some type of baby cookies. Kat glanced towards me, a relieved look on her face as I came and sat next to her. "How'd you get her to quiet down?"
"Jessa helped me, right?" She said, looking towards the four year old who's eyes were peeled to my guitar.
She glanced towards Kat for brief second, nodding. "My mom always gives Haylie these when she won't stop crying. They're really good, would you like one?" She asked me, holding out one of the really tiny cookies as her sister babbled beside her, now paying less attention to the snack and more to the little toy that was also out now.
I shook my head and smiled, my hand resting on Kat's leg. "No thanks."
"Katherine, would you like a cookie?" She asked, still completely polite even if she did seem more comfortable now.
"You can call me Kat, cutie." Kat grinned as a blush begin to creep up Jessa's cheeks. "And no thank. I'm fine."
"Okay Kat," She said before looking to me, blushing even more and from the way her eyes were locked on my guitar, I was pretty sure I already knew what she was going to ask. "Will you play a song for me please?"
I grinned, unfortunately moving my hand from Kat's leg to adjust the guitar against my lap, pulling the pick out. "Do you have a favorite song?" I asked her, hoping she wouldn't list something that I had never even heard before.
"Mommy likes The Beatles," She told me with a small smile, pulling her knees up to her chest and resting her chin against them, hugging her tiny legs. I swear, she couldn't have looked more adorable.
I quirked my brow, surprised by her choice but kind of thankful that she'd at least given me something I was familiar with. I nodded. "Any requests?"
She pursed her lips together, thinking before she glanced to her sister and grinned. "Haylie wants you to play 'All My Loving."
Both Kat and I's eyes shifted towards the little baby, her legs stretched out in front of her and one of the cookies crushed beside her. I smiled, beginning to move my fingers slowly against the guitar as I began playing the song. Immediately, Haylie started clapping along, completely off beat but so cute as she rolled onto her back. "She seems to like it," Kat murmured beside me, picking up the girl and setting her back against her lap. My eyes followed her as she looked at me wide-eyed and clapped her hands against Kat's thighs, moving to the music.
"Haylie likes it," Jessa spoke up and I look towards her, grinning at her and singing the chorus, which made her cheeks turn bright pink.
I finally slowed down before coming to a stop, looking towards the four year old for approval. "Did you like it?"
"I did." She nodded just as her sister squealed loudly.
"You have a fan." Kat smirked at me, nuzzling her neck and causing her to giggle loudly.
"Not my first," I answered with a cocky grin.
She raised a brow, pulling her head back and biting down on her lip, giving me the urge to kiss her. "You better be talking about me."
"You? God no. I'm talking about all my other wives," I teased her, smirking as watched Jessa from the corner of my eye as she reached for the remote and turned on the TV, seeming to figure it out herself.
Kat bit back a grin, rolling her eyes. "All your other wives, huh?"
I just smiled, leaning forward and finally pressing a kiss against her lips but it was far too quick and soft for me. "You look good with her," I said when I pulled back, nodding towards her with Haylie in her arms. I saw Jessa enthralled in some show as the recliner seemed to eat her up she was so tiny in comparison, making me smile yet again as I looked back towards Kat.
"You think?" She grinned, turning Haylie around and standing her up on her legs to look at her, making a face and making her giggle.
"Baba," Haylie nearly screeched, before repeating it once again, louder and then seeming to set her sights on it moments later because she was immediately squirming from Kat's hands, trying to get to the ground where the bottle was sitting.
Kat let her go, setting her down on the floor where she grabbed it and popped it right into her mouth. Me and Kat both watched her intently before I turned to Jessa. "Do you need anything?" I asked her.
She looked towards both me and Kat from her spot. "Phineas and Ferb is on," She told us with a smile, which I guess meant that it was a good thing. Honestly, I didn't even know what that was.
I looked towards Kat as if to say "now what?" since both of the kids seemed perfectly happy doing their own thing. Jessa was watching TV and Haylie had now abandoned her bottle for some of the toys her mom had packed. Kat just shrugged, moving closer towards me on the couch and I slipped my arm around her small waist. She smiled at me. "We're not too bad at this."
I nodded, though I really wasn't surprised. I knew she would be a natural. "You're perfect," I told her as I pressed a kiss against the top of her head. Just then, a disgusting smell filled the room and me and Kat both pulled back and looked at each other, knowing exactly what the smell was. Kat instantly opened her mouth to object when I cut her off. "I'll change her diaper."
Kat raised her brow, clearly surprised by me offering. But I'd have to do it sometime, right? "Go ahead. I certainly won't stop you." She just smirked.
"How did I know that you wouldn't have any objections?" I grinned, standing up and stretching as I felt her eyes on my body.
"Haylie made a stinky!!!" Jessa exclaimed as the horrible smell reached her. I looked to her where she was cupping her hand over her nose, making me which I could do the very same as I knelt over the baby, taking her onesie off.
"You're going to need a new diaper for her," Kat told me as she moved towards the bag that my aunt had given us, my hands peeling back the sides of the diaper and regretting offering to do it, honestly.
Kat set it beside me as I tried not to look at the stuff actually in the diaper. "Where are the baby wipes?" I questioned, the smell becoming even stronger.
"Here." Kat handed me the wipes to me and I took Haylie's ankles, pulling her feet from where she was playing with her toes and trying to clean her without really thinking about what I was doing as I heard Kat talk beside me again. "I think you'll need a few more of those baby wipes."
I held out the dirty one away from me, glancing towards her after realizing that I didn't really have any place to put it. "Will you throw this away?"
"No," She said back, looking disgusted at almost just the thought of it, and she wasn't even the one down here having to change the diaper.
"Well I can't just hold it," I said firmly. "Or set it down on the ground."
Kat took off towards the kitchen before coming back with an empty plastic bag, holding it open for me as I discarded the wipe.
"I can't breath!" Jessa exclaimed in a muffled tone, probably still covering her face, which kind of made me smile, though I wouldn't really say I was exactly happy now considering how terrible it still smelt.
Kat set the bag beside me as I grabbed yet another wipe as I continued to clean up Haylie. "I'll fix that," She said, heading off down the hallway as I finished cleaning Haylie. I put on the new clean diaper before taking the dirty one and closing it back up, putting it in the plastic bag along with the wipes, watching my wife from the corner of my eye as she sprayed the air around Jessa first and then me and the baby with her perfume. After, she reached for the plastic bag. "This diaper weighs a ton," She said seriously. "And how do you know how to put a diaper on a baby?"
I shrugged as I put back on Haylie's onesie, buttoning it back up as I turned to Kat. "I don't know. I just did it," I said honestly. As far as I knew this had been my first time changing a diaper, but I had just kind of figured it out. I set Haylie on her feet again and smiled at her. "All done!"
She giggled as I tickled her softly, trying to repeat my words but most of it just being a jumble of sounds, which was really just even cuter. It definitely wasn't easy to watch kids, but so far, I liked it. "Jessa, when does your sister usually go to bed?" I heard Kat ask and I glanced towards the clock, realizing that it was eight, which for a baby I was pretty sure was late.
I looked back towards the four year old as she shrugged. "I think around now. I go to bed at nine but my mom said I can stay up late and wait for her tonight," She said with a huge grin, like it was the best thing that could have happened to her. I remember being younger and being allowed to stay up had been so exciting though and feeling the same way as her.
I glanced towards Kat. "We can put her down in our room?" I suggested, it coming out more as a question.
She looked into the bag, which had seemed so small when my aunt handed it over to us but which I now realized was packed with a bunch of stuff. She pulled out a bottle, a small blanket, and a tiny bear. "Yeah, I guess so," She answered, seeming just as unsure as me. I glanced towards Jessa to make sure she was okay before picking up Haylie and walking towards our room with her. I set the little one girl on our bed and she walked right towards the middle on her own before plopping down and looking up at us, making both of us laugh. "She's so cute," Kat murmured, handing her the bottle which she popped right into her mouth.
"Almost as cute as you." I smirked, watching as Kat got her set up in the bed and Haylie's eyes began to get heavier and she looked sleepy.
"I think she might be cuter." Kat shook her head, watching Haylie as she snuggled up in her blanket, closing her eyes and turning away from us.
I reached out and grabbed Kat's waist, pulling her body into mine and kissing her softly. "That's impossible," I murmured, setting my forehead against hers and smiling at her.
"This is fun," Kat said, smiling back at me and looking so gorgeous. I swear, I loved her more every second.
I nodded. "It is. Do you think you could do it every day though?" I asked, knowing that we were both thinking the same thing. Unsaid, this was kind of a test on whether or not we were going to be able to be parents.
"If I had you with me..."
"Well I'm not going anywhere," I told her, kissing her once again.
"Then I think we should start making babies right when they get picked up." Kat murmured, a smirk on her lips.
I grinned, hearing Haylie talking to herself from the bed and reminding me that we weren't alone and I couldn't go and f.ck her right now. Ugh. "I really like the sound of that."
